Large Shafts Gear Cutting

Screws Acme, Buttress, Standard, Trapezoidal & Custom Thread Forms

Not all threaded shafts are the same. While standard fastener threads are common, many mechanical applications demand specialized thread forms designed specifically for the loads, motions, and operating conditions. Cutting them accurately requires equipment and expertise that goes beyond general threading.

Thread Forms Capacity

Milan's Machining cuts Acme, buttress, standard, trapezoidal and custom thread forms on shafts up to 182 inches in length and 10 inches in OD. These thread forms gives our customers access to precision threading services across a wide range of configurations and applications.

Acme threads are one of the most common linear motion thread forms. With a 29-degree flank angle, wider and more trapezoidal than a standard V-thread, they're designed to handle the axial loads generated in lead screws, jacks, presses, and feed mechanisms where a rotating shaft needs to reliably convert rotational motion into linear movement. Robust and well-proven, they're widely specified across industrial machinery and equipment.

BUTTRESS THREADS

Buttress Threads

Buttress threads are engineered for applications where the load is applied heavily in one direction, such as in clamping devices, and lifting equipment. The asymmetric tooth form places the load-bearing face nearly perpendicular to the shaft axis, maximizing the thread's ability to resist axial force in the primary load direction. This keeps the buttress threads profile practical to manufacture and assemble.

Standard Thread Forms

Standard thread forms, including unified and metric profiles, are cut when the application calls for the use of commercially available nuts, couplings, or mating components. Custom thread forms fall outside any standard specification. Regardless of standard thread forms or custom thread forms, our team works directly from customer prints and models to produce the geometric form the application requires.
