Gear Cutting - Worm & Worm Wheels
Shaft Worm Thread Milling Capacity
Milan's Machining shaft worm thread milling has a range of 1.75 Diametral Pitch to 32 Diametral Pitch (14 Module to 0.75 Module), from single-start to 8-start worms, and on shafts up to 182 inches in length. The pitch range combination plus the multi-start capability, along with extended length capacity gives customers access to shaft worm thread milling that cover a range of drive configurations and applications.
The number of starts on a shaft worm directly determines the gear ratio and the speed of advancement per revolution. A single-start shaft worm advances one tooth of the worm wheel per shaft revolution, producing high reduction ratios suited for low-speed, high-torque applications. As the number of starts increases, the lead angle steepens, the drive becomes more efficient, and higher output speeds become achievable. Selecting the right number of starts is up to you, our customer, during the design process. We understand that what you need can affect performance in the finished drive.
Accurate shaft worm thread milling requires an experienced machinist that pays close attention to detail. These skills will directly influence how smoothly and efficiently the worm engages its mating wheel. Any errors will show up quickly by producing noise, heat, premature wear, or poor load distribution across the mesh.
Every shaft worm thread milling work is cut to print specifications and inspected by our Quality Assurance team for accuracy.
Timing Belt Pulleys
Timing belt pulleys are essential in mechanical systems where precise, slip-free power transmission and accurate motion control are essential for operation.
Timing belt pulleys:
- Maintain exact timing relationships between rotating parts
- Deliver consistent torque without slipping
- Enable repeatable positioning
- Support efficient and reliable mechanical performance
Our external gear cutting is held to close tolerances and inspected before shipment.

Sprockets
Sprockets are toothed wheels designed to engage directly with a chain or track, transmitting motion and torque through positive mechanical engagement. Tooth form accuracy is critical to smooth chain seating, consistent pitch engagement, and long service life. Milan's Machining cuts sprockets across a broad pitch and diameter range, holding the dimensional precision required for true pitch matching and uniform load distribution across every tooth. Whether for roller chain, engineering-class chain, or custom drive configurations, our sprocket cutting capability supports demanding industrial applications across a range of industries.
