Milling, Grinding, Turning

Milan's Machining offers both vertical and horizontal CNC turning capabilities, giving customers access to a range of turned components that most shops have difficulty handling under one roof. From large rings, gears, flanges to long precision shafts and complex cylinders, we have the equipment and the experience to deliver accurate, quality inspected parts… on-time.

CNC Vertical Turning

When a part is too large in diameter or too heavy for a standard horizontal lathe, a Vertical Turning Lathe, VTL, is the right machine for the project. At Milan's Machining, our CNC vertical turning machines handle components up to 94.5 inches in diameter and 61 inches tall. This has earned us a reputation as one of the most skilled shops for large-format turning work.

The CNC vertical turning, offers more than just a large size. Because heavy parts sit naturally on the rotary table, gravity works in our favor. The process works to reduce the stress and deflection often found on large bores, faces, and outside diameters, OD. As a result, we regularly work on everything from large flanges and rings to pressure vessel components, turbine housings, heavy weldments, and rough castings that need their first surface machined.

Our experienced operators understand the unique challenges of large-diameter projects, and use precision measuring equipment throughout the machining process to make sure every part is right before it gets shipped from our facility.

CNC Horizontal Turning

For shaft projects, precision cylindrical components, and complex turned profiles, our CNC horizontal turning offers a maximum of 31.5 inches in diameter and 236 inches in length. Milan’s is one of the few machine shops in the Midwest equipped to handle long cylinder drive shafts, rolls, lead screws, and hydraulic cylinders.

For accuracy, we work from provided electronic prints and CAD drawings. Our professional staff regularly communicates with you throughout the process to ensure that we deliver according to your specifications. This allows us to keep your project on schedule. Once the job is complete, our quality control department verifies its accuracy prior to shipment.

If you have a job that requires turning services Milan's Machining has the equipment and expertise to get it done right the first time.

Manual Turning

Not every job order belongs on a CNC machine. Short runs, one-off repairs and jobs that require constant operator judgment, are better served by an experienced machinist at a manual lathe machine.

Our manual turning capacity works up to 192 inches in length. This means we regularly handle long shafts, columns, cylinders and bar stock that require steady rest support and attention to straightness and finish along the full length of the part.
